Joget Hati Senang for Monday 28 March 2011

Get your sarong ready for class. It's JOGET time.
Mei Ling has choreographed a beautiful joget and its fun and enjoyable as all the steps are "friendly". Let's not worry about the hand and body movement yet, as they will come in place after we have mastered the footwork.

Not a difficult dance ....even though it has 42 steps for Part A and 100 steps for Part B ! ! ! We also hope to learn from our fellow dancers who know how to joget !

The Joget
Joget is a popular traditional dance in Malaysia. It is usually performed at cultural festivals, wedding celebrations and other social
functions.
The Joget's origin can been traced back to and is influenced by the Portuguese folk dance “Branyo”. It could have been brought to
the country after 1511 when Malacca* was colonized by the Portuguese.
The main characteristic of the Joget is the rhythm. It is accompanied by a fast tempo with duple and triple beat divisions. The dance is usually accompanied by a violin or flute, a drum, a gong, or by a small western ensemble with solo voice. Foot movements of this dance are more important than the hand movements although the hands add to the ‘flavour’ of the dance.
Male and female dance together ,either as a couple, or in groups of the same gender without any physical contact between the genders.

Line Dancers can LAUGH more to stay Young & Happy

There's a scene in the movie Mary Poppins where Uncle Albert (played by Ed Wynn) gets stuck on the ceiling of his sitting room, buoyed upwards by uncontainable glee. Uncle Albert, it seems, was given to fits of laughter that literally lifted his spirits—along with the rest of him—right off the floor.

An Indian based physician, Madan Kataria explains why laughter is truly the best medicine. He is the author of Laugh for No Reason (Madhuri International) and founder and president of Laughter Clubs.

Laughter has two sources, one from the body, one from the mind. Adults tend to laugh from the mind. “We use judgments and evaluations about what’s funny and what isn’t,” he says. Children, who laugh much more frequently than adults, laugh from the body. “They laugh all the time they’re playing. Laughter Yoga is based on cultivating your childlike playfulness. We all have a child inside us wanting to laugh, wanting to play.”

"This laughter practice," explains Kataria, "moves progressively from the ho ho, ha ha exercise to other types of simulated laughter. It's what I call my 'laughter cocktail.'" Kataria's "cocktail" includes hearty laughter, greeting laughter, open-mouthed silent laughter, humming laughter, lion laughter , and swinging laughter, with arm movement. Each laughter is sustained for up to 45 seconds, and followed with deep breathing and stretching exercises.

The laughter exercises are designed to be done together, with participants progressing from one type of chuckle to another in the company of others. Says Kataria: "Laughter in laughter clubs is the purest laughter because it is not for any reason. It is not directed at others but we learn to laugh at ourselves."

Is there anything that Kataria can't laugh about? "Life can be a challenge," he admits, "It helps if you're able to laugh." In fact, he claims the benefits are positively life-enhancing. Not only does laughter help you to lose your inhibitions and gain self-confidence, Kataria explains that by embracing the spirit of laughter, it's possible to achieve a more positive outlook on life, as well as improved lung capacity and abdominal tone.

The use of abdominal muscles during the practice of forced laughter tone the digestive system & strong abdominal muscles contribute to a healthy digestive system. He further maintains that laughter practice raises both pulse rate and blood pressure, stimulating and toning the circulatory system, and strengthens the respiratory system by utilizing the entire capacity of the lungs. We clear our respiratory passages and build strong lungs which are essential to the well-being of both body and spirit. For more info go to :-

Marz and Mummies on 16 March 2011

Let's exercise our brains with this "3 section" dance.
It looks like a lot of fun and is rated ADVANCE level. It's like learning 3 dances of 32 counts each !
We learn by practising SLOWLY each part separately to perfection before we can complete the whole dance. The music will guide us into the sequence of the dance which is not difficult due to the good choreography by Niels Poulsen.

I think we can manage only Sections A and B for Wed.
To make the dance easier,:
We shall make section A into 1 wall throughout the dance. Hence sections A,B and C will all be danced in 1 wall.

NOTE! Phrasing explanation of the A, B and C sections:
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th time you do A you change the last 4 counts (counts 29-32) from 2 half turns to a 4 count walk around ½ turn L walking R L R L.
All of this means that you start your 3rd and 5th A section facing 6:00.
Now section A is a 2 wall dance and as a result you always do B and C facing 12:00!
Tips: In the B section you do what Marz tells you to do... The C section always starts exactly after Marz has started singing ‘She said’.

Monday Class Starts Today 7 March 2011- Dr Wannado

Hope to see many of you gals and guys this evening at 7pm in the Sacred Heart Church.
We shall celebrate our new opening with an exciting dance, Dr Wanna Do.
Then we shall master "Snap Your Fingers".

A lively and fun dance choreographed by a good dancer, Ivonne Verhagen.
We have not tried her choreography before. I like her choice of song by Caro Emerald, who also sang the song for our previous dance THAT MAN.
Watch the many actions for this dance especially in part B where ladies get a chance to do differently from the men.

With These Eyes by Neils Poulsen

I was sitting on the floor in front of these dancers in the Dec 2010 JB Dance4Peace function wishing that I could dance with them to this beautiful song in NC2 step(night club). That's me in green T holding my hand phone to video the dancers.
Jennifer Choo is in the corner in her "tarzan" gear.
One of the ladies gave their pink team T-shirt to Niels Poulsen which he promptly wore.

Age is just a Number

This video is very entertaining. The lady is 70 years old and she is line dancing in a "hip hop" style. In KK we also have senior citizens who can dance like this, if they are taught the steps and actions.
Dance while You still can !

Our Saturday Class to Be Replaced by a weekday class

Due to my time constraints (kid's tuition), we will have to cancel our Sat class and replace it with a Mon or Fri.
I am looking for a suitable venue and currently only the Sacred Heart Hall is available on Mondays from 5pm onwards. I am thinking of starting the class early , say 5.45pm? and hope that the working ladies can come direct from office.
Do help to look for other suitable premises for either Mon or Fri. I will inform everybody once I have firmed up the time and venue.

Our last Sat class will be this coming Sat on 5 March 2011.

Snap Your Fingers for Wed 2 March 2011

We shall enjoy this dance on Wed if we have extra time left after revising:-
1.Victory, Zoobi Doobi. Sweetie & Comic Strip
2. Cha Cha Conchita, Dance of Love, At This Moment, Cuban Yeah
3. Our Dances taught in 2011
If time does not permit,we then shall SNAP OUR FINGERS on Sat, 5 March 2011

This seems to be a very popular dance by Rachel McEnaney, currently one of the top choreograpghers in the world. The dance is easier than it appears and the slower music tempo , No Tags or Restarts certainly helps a lot.
